Barney's Farm traces its roots to the late 1980s, when founder Derry Brett spent several years travelling through Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Nepal, Thailand, Vietnam and China, collecting landrace cannabis genetics directly from the farmers who had grown them for generations. He returned to Amsterdam in 1992 with that collection, took over a coffeeshop, and began stabilising and crossing the landraces into the strains that would build the Barney's Farm name.
Few seed banks can match its competition record: Barney's Farm has picked up more than 40 Cannabis Cup and international awards over the decades, with strains like G13 Haze, Critical Kush, Liberty Haze, Pineapple Chunk and Tangerine Dream forming what the breeder calls its "hall of fame." The catalogue started out regular-only, moved into feminised seeds as the technology matured, and added autoflowering genetics as that category grew, so today's range spans all three seed types.
More recently, Barney's Farm has leaned into partnerships with contemporary US genetics houses, crossing its historic landrace-derived catalogue with modern Cali-influenced lines to produce newer releases like Lemon Cherry Gelato, bridging over three decades of Dutch breeding tradition with current US-driven trends in flavour and potency. Every strain passes through the breeder's own research lab for stability and cannabinoid verification before release.
