Amsterdam Genetics grew directly out of the Boerejongens coffeeshop chain, founded by Mariska, who discovered her passion for cannabis while working at an Amsterdam coffeeshop during her university studies. She went on to purchase her first coffeeshop - which became the original Boerejongens - before eventually expanding into breeding her own genetics under the Amsterdam Genetics name, drawing directly on classic Amsterdam cannabis culture as her starting point.

The brand's breakthrough came with White Choco, a cross of White Russian and Chocolope that became so popular in hash form that Amsterdam Genetics struggled to keep up with demand for a period. That early success established a pattern the brand has followed since: taking well-loved classic Dutch genetics and crossing them with modern strains to create distinctly Amsterdam-flavoured hybrids, sold both through the Boerejongens coffeeshop network and as seed for home growers.

Amsterdam Genetics is genuinely unusual in being one of the only seed banks that actually produces its seeds in the Netherlands itself, rather than in Spain or elsewhere in Europe. Popular releases include Blue Amnesia, Strawberry Glue and Grapefruit Superstar, alongside the brand's own take on classics like Super Silver Haze.
