Doja - also known as Doja Pak - was founded by Ryan Bartholomew in Sacramento, California, during the Prop 215 medical cannabis era, when he built a reputation supplying some of the finest cannabis packs available in the state long before recreational legalisation arrived in 2016. Doja moved into formal seed production in 2020, working closely with longtime collaborator Rusty, known as "the Duke of Doja," a breeding partnership that dates back to 2012.

Doja's biggest contribution to the wider cannabis world came through popularising rather than originating genetics - the brand is widely credited with mainstreaming RS-11 (Rainbow Sherbert #11), a strain bred by Deep East and grown by fellow Los Angeles cultivator Wizard Trees, which became one of the most influential exotic strains of recent years. Today Doja works primarily with its own proprietary genetics, building signature releases like Coffin Candy (Runtz x Strawberry Zkilato) and Peach Tree around a specific breeding philosophy: chasing unusual flavours and mouthfeel - "exotic fruits, new forms of gas" - rather than simply maximising THC.

The brand has built an international following partly through an early, strong social media presence, and partly through Bartholomew's stated goal of getting his California genetics grown by cultivators around the world and seeing what unique phenotypes emerge in different climates.
