CBG Isolate
CBG isolate at Express Highs
Here at Express Highs we carry cannabinoid isolates, extracts and more. If you're looking for something that's just impossible to find in person, like CBG isolate, this is the correct spot. We have the easy-to-find stuff like Broad Spectrum CBD too. Express Highs has been doing this a long time, so you know when you order, you're in good hands. But let's talk about CBG isolates a bit and what they are.
What is cannabigerol (CBG) isolate?
Cannabigerol isolate is CBG in its purest form – one single compound, separated from everything else the hemp plant produces. It's over 98% pure and comes as a fine white crystalline powder with no noticeable flavour or smell. Isolates are free of other materials like waxes and other cannabinoids. It's literally an isolated compound. Just CBG.
This is particularly useful for folks who don't want the other parts of the hemp plant for their uses. For instance, not everyone wants the cannabinoids that produce psychoactive effects, aka “getting high”. Some people want to explore other cannabinoids that have been reported to have medical benefits without the buzz.
Why CBG is called the “mother cannabinoid”
What sets CBG apart from its more famous relatives is where it sits in the plant's chemistry. CBG is often called the “mother cannabinoid” because it's the building block that other cannabinoids are made from. The hemp plant produces cannabigerolic acid (CBGA) first, and enzymes then convert it into the acids that become THC, CBD and CBC. In most mature plants, that conversion happens so efficiently that only trace amounts of CBG are left, usually around 1% by weight, compared to the 20%+ CBD you'll find in high-CBD strains. That's why making CBG isolate takes much more plant material than making CBD isolate, and why pure CBG products tend to be rarer and more expensive to produce. You're basically paying for all the plant material that got converted into something else before you could get to the CBG. It's a numbers game, and the numbers are not in your favour. That's what makes finding a good CBG isolate worth the effort.
What the science says
Scientists have studied how CBG interacts with the body's receptors. A 2009 patent filing describes CBG as binding to both CB1 and CB2 cannabinoid receptors. More recent studies have found that it acts as a weak agonist at CB1, a partial agonist at CB2, and also shows activity at α2 adrenergic receptors and TRPV1 channels. A 2026 human trial published in the Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences looked at oral CBG in healthy adults at doses from 25 mg to 200 mg and reported it was “well tolerated with no robust pharmacodynamic effects.” No intoxication. Separate animal research has found sex-specific differences in how CBG is processed, with female rats showing higher circulating levels after oral administration compared to males. So there's real science here, not just hype. It's still early days though, and research is ongoing.
Properties, handling and storage
CBG isolate is a white crystalline solid with a melting point around 52°C. It's lipophilic, meaning it dissolves in oils, butter and alcohol, but not in water. That makes it easy to mix into oil-based formulations, which is the most common way it gets used. The powder is odourless and flavourless, so it won't change the taste or smell of whatever you're working with. Store it in an airtight container away from UV light and heat. Unopened, it has a shelf life of about 24 months under ambient conditions. Keep it cool, keep it dark, keep it sealed, and you're good. It's not complicated, but it does matter. Heat and light will degrade it over time, so don't leave it sitting on a windowsill. That's true of all cannabinoids.
Legal status in the EU
Under EU regulations, cannabinoids including CBG are classified as Novel Foods. Extracts of Cannabis sativa L. containing non-psychoactive cannabinoids are considered novel foods because a history of consumption has not been demonstrated, and this applies to the extracts themselves as well as any products they get added to. This classification means CBG isolate is not authorised for sale as a food or food supplement in the EU without pre-market approval. The Belgian health authority has confirmed that synthetic cannabinoids like CBG are also considered novel foods under this framework. These regulations change all the time, obviously, so make sure you do your own research. What's allowed today might not be allowed tomorrow, and what's not allowed today might get approved next year. Stay informed.
