Serious Seeds was founded in Amsterdam in 1995 by a breeder known simply as Simon, whose path into cannabis was distinctly unconventional - a biology graduate and lifelong non-smoker (of both tobacco and cannabis, given the Dutch habit of mixing the two), he only discovered pure cannabis while travelling through Africa in 1986. That experience sent him back to the Netherlands with a private genetics collection, which eventually led to a role at Sensi Seeds, and then a partnership with American cannabis migrants that produced two award-winning strains in 1994: AK-47 and Chronic.
AK-47, first stabilised in 1992 after Simon tested thousands of experimental plants, went on to become one of the most decorated cannabis strains in history, with more than 27 awards to its name including "Plant of the Year 2003" from High Times readers. Simon has always kept its exact parentage a closely guarded secret, revealing only that it draws on Colombian, Mexican, Thai and Afghani stock.
What sets Serious Seeds apart is its restraint - the catalogue has stayed deliberately small for three decades, built around a handful of thoroughly tested classics like Kali Mist, White Russian, Bubble Gum and Warlock rather than a constant churn of new hype-driven releases. That's the whole idea behind the name: no gimmicks, no games, just genetics that have earned their place.
